2010 Eastern European Photograph Conservation Intern Arrives at NEDCC

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is pleased to welcome the Center's 2010 Photograph Conservation Intern Alexander Vatov, a conservator at
the Central Laboratory for Conservation and Restoration
at the National Museum of History in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The three-month internship at NEDCC began on September 14 and continues through the end of November. The program is made possible by support from the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the
Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAM

In 2003, when NEDCC began the initiative to train Central and Eastern European conservators in photograph conservation, there wasn’t a single professional in the region who had been trained in this specialized field. At the same time, important collections of photographs were coming to light, many of which had been hidden away for safety during the years of Communist rule.

Since then, over 40 conservators, teachers, and graduate students from eleven countries have received training through the program developed by NEDCC in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (AFAD) in Bratislava, Slovakia.

2010 INTERNSHIP

This year’s three-month internship begins a new phase in NEDCC’s successful training program. During workshops presented by NEDCC at the AFAD in Bratislava over the past few years, Alexander received a thorough introduction to photograph conservation. The 2010 internship will provide the opportunity for him to refine his skills while working closely with NEDCC Senior Photograph Conservator, Monique Fischer.
