NEDCC Digitizes Rare Medieval Scroll
High-quality images to be used in a 2011 scholarly publication
The Northeast Document Conservation Center recently completed digital imaging of a rare medieval illuminated manuscript – a fifty-foot long parchment scroll that chronicles the history of the Western world from creation through the year 1461.
The scroll was imaged at NEDCC for a forthcoming translation and detailed study of the Chronicle by manuscript scholar Lisa Fagin Davis, to be published in 2011 by Brepols, an international academic publisher of works in the humanities. Using the high-resolution digital images provided by NEDCC, the book will include a full-color facsimile of this scroll as well as a tagged and searchable digital facsimile on DVD.
NEDCC is one of the few facilities in the United States capable of high-quality imaging of fragile, oversize collection materials including scrolls, wall maps, architectural drawings, blueprints, large documents, prints, drawings, and other original art.
NEDCC’s Imaging Services staff members have years of experience in the safe handling of fragile historical materials, and they work closely with the Center’s professional paper and book conservators.
