COLLECTIONS CARE: Mold Outbreaks and How to Cope with Them

This live online webinar will cover the various types of mold and the criteria and parameters for mold development, with a special emphasis on molds specific to indoor environments that house collections and artifacts. Practical methods for controling and preventing mold blooms are discussed, as is responding to mold outbreaks.

This live online webinar will cover the preservation of oversize works on paper and other supports commonly found in archival collections. Typical examples of such works are architectural plans, posters, and wall maps. Their history and production are discussed with a focus on their different processes of deterioration. Strategies for safely handling, transporting, and storing these works are presented.

Identification and Care of Photographs

This in-person workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The workshop will culminate with a discussion of storage concerns and an examination of photographs brought in by participants.

Digitizing Vintage Photographs and Negatives

Location: Boston Public Library
Through lecture and demonstration, this workshop provides information on the techniques and specifications needed to reformat photographs and negatives. Topics to be covered include:
- Working with unique vintage materials
- Imaging challenges posed by various photographic processes
- Post processing
- Data management and file organization
- Data back-up and storage systems
- Introduction to metadata for photographs
Participants are encouraged to bring images for discussion of the challenges found in every collection of historic photographs.

Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for those responsible for the care and use of photographic collections who have prior digitization experience. If you have little experience in digitization, it is recommended that you take Digitization Basics before attending this class. This workshop is also informative for people who wish to preserve their personal photographs.
