NEDCC Workshop Series
The Northeast Document Conservation Center offers a series of face-to-face workshops held at the Center’s headquarters in Andover, MA. These full-day workshops cover general and specific topics in preservation, collections care, and digitization, and many offer a hands-on component for gaining skills in basic repair techniques. The workshops are open to staff from libraries, archives, museums, municipal offices, historical societies, and other cultural institutions, as well as to private collectors and those interested in preserving family collections.

April 24, 2012
Identification and Care of Photographs

Instructor: Monique Fischer, NEDCC Senior Photograph Conservator
Location: NEDCC, Andover, MA
This in-person workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification, deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems associated with each format type. The workshop will culminate with a discussion of storage concerns and an examination of photographs brought in by participants.
The Academy of Certified Archivists will award 5 Accreditation Recertification Credits (ARCs) to eligible Certified Archivists (CAs) attending this workshop. Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for those responsible for the care and use of photographic collections and is also informative for people who wish to preserve their personal photographs.

Digitizing Vintage Photographs and Negatives

Location: Boston Public Library
Through lecture and demonstration, this workshop provides information on the techniques and specifications needed to reformat photographs and negatives. Topics to be covered include:
- Working with unique vintage materials
- Imaging challenges posed by various photographic processes
- Post processing
- Data management and file organization
- Data back-up and storage systems
- Introduction to metadata for photographs
Participants are encouraged to bring images for discussion of the challenges found in every collection of historic photographs.
The Academy of Certified Archivists will award 5 Accreditation Recertification Credits (ARCs) to eligible Certified Archivists (CAs) attending this workshop. Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for those responsible for the care and use of photographic collections who have prior digitization experience. If you have little experience in digitization, it is recommended that you take Digitization Basics before attending this class. Metadata for Digital Photographic Collections

Location: Boston Public Library
At all stages of a photographic digitization project, you will be actively developing, capturing, and managing metadata to support the use and preservation of digital images. This workshop will identify standards, strategies, and tools appropriate for creating photographic image metadata, as well as highlight key decision points in metadata management and use. Hands-on activities will enhance the understanding of best practices for creating metadata that facilitates searchability of digital image collections.
Topics will include:
- Standards, best practices, and vocabularies for image description
- Non-descriptive, embedded, and automated metadata capture
- Strategies and tools for creating and managing metadata
- Packaging, sharing, and re-using metadata
- Leveraging user-contributed metadata

Basic Book Repair

Instructor: Donia Conn, NEDCC Education and Outreach Coordinator
Location: NEDCC, Andover, MA
This in-person workshop walks participants through the steps in managing a book repair program. Participants will gain hands-on experience in basic book and paper repair techniques for general library collections. Decision-making about selection and treatment and choosing appropriate materials for book repair will be discussed. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to:
- Mend tears using a variety of techniques
- Repair hinges using a variety of techniques
- Tip in and hinge in loose or replacement pages
Note: The Basic Book Repair Workshop is not eligible for Accreditation Recertification Credits (ARCs) from the Academy of Certified Archivists. Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for library staff who perform book repair in libraries and/or supervisors of book repair units for general collections. This workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of research collections or materials that are rare, special, or archival.

Custom Protective Enclosures

Instructor: Donia Conn, NEDCC Education and Outreach Coordinator
Location: NEDCC, Andover, MA
This in-person workshop is an introduction to the construction of simple enclosures from quality materials for library and archival materials. It focuses on techniques that do not require expensive equipment and supplies. In the hands-on component, participants will learn to:
- Construct a custom pamphlet binder with pocket or flap enclosure
- Construct a book wrapper
- Construct a corrugated clamshell box
Construction of other enclosures will be demonstrated as time permits.
