NEDCC News August 2018

NEDCC Imaging Services Update

New Equipment
NEDCC just received our first 100 mp digital camera back - in fact 2 of them!  With these cameras we are able to digitize oversize objects for less, and can get even more information from glass plate, nitrate, and acetate negatives.

Rehousing Service
NEDCC's Digital Imaging department has introduced preservation-oriented rehousing as a new service in conjunction with imaging, since the digitization workflow affords the perfect opportunity to move the objects into a better envelope, folder, or sleeve.

Whether the project is 30 photographs or 30,000 photographs, NEDCC’s Imaging Services department collaborates with the Center's conservators to develop rehousing methodologies for almost any digitization project and almost any type of object, from 35mm negatives to 3’ x 4’ blueprints, with the long-term preservation of the objects as our main objective. We work with you to understand your storage environment, the collection’s existing housing conditions and its anticipated use after digitization, and we can draft proposals detailing the specific methods and materials we recommend for your collection.

Claire Grund, Conservation Outreach Professional
Many of you saw the announcement that Associate Conservator Claire Grund is leaving NEDCC to pursue a career in nursing. Well, good news!  Claire has agreed to continue on at NEDCC part time while she is attending nursing school and we are searching for her replacement. Claire will be working two days a week for us, so she will continue to offer advice to clients on care and conservation of their collections.

NEDCC is still welcoming applications for the position of Conservation Outreach Professional, and Claire will be invaluable in training the new staff member. The Conservation Outreach Professional provides free consultations to collections-holding institutions throughout the United States to help them evaluate and prioritize their conservation needs.
